Here’s why the old method of building homes is not sustainable anymore. 

 According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) study, an estimated 8,000 lbs of waste is created from the construction of a 2,000 square foot home. Also, the EPA has estimated that waste from construction accounts for up to 40% of the nation’s solid waste. 

Stick framed homes (the average home built in the U.S.) uses about 55,000 to 60,000 lbs of wood for an average 2,400 sqft house. 

The typical 2,400 square foot, single-family home requires about 16,000 board feet of framing lumber and over 14,000 square feet of other wood products including plywood, oriented stand board, glulam beams, wood I-joists, laminated veneer lumber, hardboard, particleboard and medium-density fiberboard (MDF). To give you a perspective of how much wood this is, if you lined up all the wood end-to-end it would be just shy of 6 miles!!  That’s basically like running the distance of a 10k race!

So, with the population rising and no end to home building in the foreseeable future, we need to come up with another strategy.  3D earthbuilding comes into play.

In April 2015, Nepal, India experienced a 7.3 earthquake that devastating the region. There were 30 earthbuildings built over the last few years. All 30 were standing after the shaking had stopped. The majority of the homes around them were collapsed. This is a testimony to the strength of these buildings, which is why this type of home would be ideal for building in any part of California.
