Cheers to Sarajevo
A story about love and its power to overcome hate, discrimination & war.
Context:
The early 1990s. Yugoslavia is teetering on the brink of war as the different republics elect independence from the Federation of Yugoslavia. Where religions, cultures and languages once represented the country’s rich diversity now becomes the catalyst for conflict, violence and unimaginable atrocities. Bosnia-Herzegovina is at the epicenter of the violence; and has since been immortalized for suffering the worst ethnic cleansing in Europe since WWII.
It is in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia, where the story unfolds.
Story:
Peter leaves South Africa in 1991 to seek the photograph that will make him famous. His journey becomes one of survival. When he is separated from his team his search for them takes him through the Bosnian capital, Sarajevo. Here he takes a photograph of Mirela, a 26-year old Bosnian woman and Aleksander, a 30-year old Serbian soldier. Aleksander and Mirela are having a forbidden love affair and Peter uses his photograph of them as blackmail to coerce Mirela into being his guide to find his team.
Before they are able to leave the city, Sarajevo is besieged and the characters find themselves at the centre of the war. Friendship, love and loyalty are questioned. Aleksander’s unquestioning Serbian nationalism is confronted by Mirela’s Bosnian acceptance and tolerance within the most basic form of human interaction – love.
