Project aim
This project is to fund publication of a biography of the footballer, Frank Soo, the only England international player of Chinese origin.
The project is to fund (or part-fund) the research and publishing costs of a biography of the footballer, Frank Soo. The full title will be The Wanderer: the story of Frank Soo, football’s forgotten genius.
A footballer whose remarkable story has never been told, Frank Soo was the first player of Chinese origin to represent the England international team. Frank played for Stoke City with Stanley Matthews and was widely regarded to be Matthews’ equal in the quality and attractiveness of his playing style. He also played for Leicester City and Luton Town, and went on to have a long coaching career, including coaching the Norwegian team at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, and a spell managing Scunthorpe United.
His story is mostly one of triumph, but his life was also affected by personal tragedy, particularly because of the early deaths of one of his brothers and his wife. Frank felt that he would have had a longer and better recognised England career had he not have been of Chinese ethnic origin and it is difficult to argue with that. Much of the information about Soo that is currently in the public domain is factually incorrect. The aim of this book – apart from telling a fascinating story – is to correct that misinformation and to campaign for the recognition of Frank’s significant place in football history.
Frank Soo’s remaining family are aware of the project and have kindly assisted me in my research. I am a writer who has published three books, including Ipswich Town: a History (Amberley, 2013). I contributed an article about Sir Bobby Robson to the 2015 Europa League Cup Final programme and I have written for the fanzine Turnstile Blues and the football website The Two Unfortunates.
Any remaining funds not spent on the book’s publication will go towards a campaign to recognise Frank Soo’s contribution to football and for his international appearances (Wartime internationals were not classified by the FA as “official”) to be made into full England caps.
My aim is to publish this book by the end of August 2016. I will be happy to answer any questions about it by e-mail.
