Update 16/2/16: Very excited to announce that Frances de la Tour is writing the Foreword for the book! Frances is a Tony and Olivier award winning theatre and film actress best known for her roles in The History Boys, Rising Damp and Harry Potter.
I’ve known Frances for more than 20 years through my good friend Josh (her son) who I have travelled with extensively through Africa, North America and Asia. I am also a huge fan of her work so I was delighted when she agreed to be part of this project.
Nature photography has taken me to some of the most beautiful national parks and wilderness areas in the world – I’ve witnessed the great migration in east Africa, humpback whales breaching in the Pacific Ocean and observed primates at close quarters in the rain forests of South America. Photographing the wildlife and landscapes of Hampstead Heath has been equally exhilarating. This 800 acre ancient park is just 5km from the London city centre and boasts an incredible variety of plants and animals. Over the last four years it has been my mission to capture the beauty and diversity of this special green space and through a beautiful collection of images I have achieved this. I am now ready to self-publish and for that I need your help.

I’ve poured my heart and soul into gathering images for this book and built special relationships with individuals and the wider community connected to Hampstead Heath. I’m passionate about wildlife and conservation and a big advocate of getting out and exploring your local patch and with this book I want to show that you don’t have to travel far to experience amazing wildlife encounters.
I have taken the final images, written the text and the design is complete. I now need your help to raise the funds by purchasing a book, pack of cards or a print to pay for the printing and production. If you can’t manage that please help by spreading the word about this campaign through social media or the old fashioned way by telling a friend! Below are a selection of spreads from the book.

Below are 5 prints available to purchase as part of this Kickstarter campaign. They are printed to the highest standard using archival paper and inks. You can select which print you would like at the end of the campaign.

The below image is an example of the large format panoramic images taken on the Fuji 617 film camera. These are Diasec mounted to ensure an immaculate finish and limited to 6 for the Kickstarter Campaign. Prints can be chosen from the panoramic gallery on my website here

Risks and challenges
Self publishing means self financing and to achieve the highest production quality your help is invaluable to make the last stages of this long-term project happen.
You can have faith in me as I have been through this process before. I have 5 years experience in publishing and book production through my first title – Vancouver Island, Barkley to Clayoquot (2011) a coffee table book on the wildlife and landscapes of the west coast of Vancouver Island. Currently in the second edition this book sold over 3,000 copies and it is available through Gardners, the UK’s largest book distributor.
To further mitigate against any unforeseen eventualities I have hired David Brimble –www.davidbrimble.com. David has extensive experience with leading UK book publishers in Production and project management. We have worked together over the past 15 months to a meticulous schedule using a highly experienced reproduction house and an Italian printer that specialises in exceptional quality photography books.
The approved proofs and files will be sent to the printers in Italy on the 24th of April 2016. Myself and David will travel to the printers to personally check the printing process on press. The official launch date is at Catto Gallery in Hampstead, London on June 11/12th. All books, cards and prints ordered through this campaign will be distributed from Monday June 13th.
I really hope that together we can make this happen!
With much love and thanks,
Matt Maran
